Sheriff Rick Bart obviously felt the need to point a finger at County Executive Bob Drewel and the County Council, lamenting yet again their gross lack of support and funding of the Sheriff’s Department. Now Bob Drewel has pointed his finger right back at Sheriff Bart, touting his own accomplishments over the years amidst alleged budgetary constraints.
As a student of public policy, I am growing increasingly concerned that in-fighting in our county government is reaching epic proportions and it is being aired in such a public forum as guest editorials in The Herald. Mr. Bart, Mr. Drewel, what is it the two of you are hoping to gain? While both points are well made, aren’t we at a time, given current national circumstances, when we should be focusing on solutions to derive a greater sense of security from our local government? The active mudslinging contest is undermining our already weakened confidence in you.
Now, more than ever, we need a government that we are able to trust to take care of business quietly and efficiently, to fulfill it’s roles-including public protection – and to work together without vying for popularity through the press.
They’re both public servants. What we need most from them now is falling second to their self-serving political posturing. They should give it a rest and get back to what they’re getting paid to do.
