I’m feeling curiously uneasy these days now that our country is back on the right track and compassionate conservatism has carried the day. Being the good guys in the fight against evildoers, wielding righteous power and uniting as the winning team, should have more spirit than it seems to have.
There is an unease out there, not just from the sour-grape wine liberals are consoling themselves with. It is a deeper sort of malaise. The kind that arises when the spin doesn’t shine as bright as intended, when the victory party is lacking that spark that really good parties tend to have. Like maybe the winning hand was overplayed a bit.
In George Orwell’s prophetic classic the creation of enemies was a primary tactic of the state. There was always a war on. Even if the name and face of the foe changed constantly there was always a dire emergency that required total, unquestioning patriotism. I can’t shake the scary feeling that maybe we, the people, are creating out of our ignorant selfishness the kind of government even we don’t deserve.
