A letter was published on Dec. 19 that asked a few questions about Sen. Trent Lott’s comments while celebrating Sen. Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday (“Trent Lott: Who is the ‘we’ in his infamous quote?”). The “we” that Lott was referring to in the 1948 elections Thurmond ran in was Mississippi.
Secondly, Thurmond was a segregationist, not an anti-segregationist. I believe the difference in meaning is quite apparent. As with Sen. Robert Byrd, who is a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, Thurmond changed with time, too.
