Why restrict assault style weapons when they are only used in 2 percent of gun crimes? Probably because they are used in 90 percent of mass murders. Whether they are gang-bangers, religious zealots, or just ordinary nut cases, they prefer military style weapons.
The Remington model 7400 has the same basic semiauto action as the AK 47, but I have never heard of one being used in a mass shooting. It’s not an ego-altering weapon. Weapons give power. The argument that guns are just pieces of metal and no more is as bogus as saying a Pinto is the same as a Corvette. Hold a Remington 7400 up to your eye and most likely the image in the sight picture will be a deer or an elk. Do the same with a military style weapon and it may be a person or group the shooter happens to hate at the time.
Each demonstrates its design purpose. The Pinto goes for groceries, the Vette kicks butt; the Remington hunts deer, the AK 47 hunts people.
We all hear that tired argument that “cars kill people too. Are you going to restrict the use of cars?” You can’t kill someone with a car or a knife at a hundred yards. That’s not what they were designed for. There is nothing fuzzy about the ban. It should stay.
