My father was recently diagnosed with diabetes. This meant goodbye Whoppers, and hello low-fat, low-carb, low-taste foods. As I helped my parents shop for the new diet, I was shocked to see how many of the so-called “healthy foods” are so high in sugar.
Being a diabetic, my father must cut back a lot of things, but sugar especially. Many of the items that advertised being good for you are very high in sugar. It seems that food companies often focus on cutting carbohydrates and other things out of diets, but neglect cutting out sugar. It has only been recently that food items, such as Frosted Flakes and Fruit Loops, are cutting back on the sugar.
If food producers are going to capitalize on the ongoing diet craze in America, they shouldn’t just focus on cutting calories and carbs, but sugar as well. From talking to people who also have diabetes, I’m not the only one surprised by this discovery. Next time you look at a super-low carb or 99.9999 percent fat-free item, check for the sugar content as well. If Hershey can come out with sugar-free chocolate bars, don’t you think Healthy Choice can cut some sugar out of its meals?
