Bonnie Desmond sits in jail suspected in the death of her 4- month-old son. The judge who put her there is accused by a Herald reader of having “a big black hole where his heart should be” because Desmond’s only crime is “she just lacked parenting skills”.
Bonnie’s father says she was “lost.” Bonnie’s fiance thinks she should be allowed to grieve with her family. The courtroom was packed with friends and family who also think Bonnie should be out of jail.
Bonnie’s only 19, she wasn’t trained in infant handling skills … the rationalizations pile up like week old garbage.
This isn’t some game where you carry around a doll and if you drop it, no harm, no foul. This was a living, breathing human being and, as the parent, Bonnie Desmond had responsibilities. If she was ignorant, she should have educated herself … I know for a fact there is no shortage of parenting programs and classes available to those who want to learn. And if she couldn’t live up to her responsibilities then maybe she shouldn’t be having children.
I do agree with one sentiment expressed by a Herald reader … she is not a danger to society. But, in the same vein, she is no longer a danger to an innocent little boy either.
