I continue to read with horror the continuing saga of Tim Eyman and his initiative drives. However, I am also saddened that apparently many people like Ben Hays of Lynnwood support his initiatives (“Tim Eyman: Kill the messenger, ignore the message,” Aug. 18, Letters).
Many of us are only concerned with our pocketbook. We want to buy expensive cars, but are not willing to pay the extra licensing costs. We want to drive when and wherever we want, without considering the needs of others.
I don’t know what Mr. Hays’ experience is with his elected officials, but mine has been most positive. I have visited them in Olympia during the legislative session, have shared my concerns and listened to them share the problems of meeting all of the fiscal needs of the state, which is most complicated.
I urge all of us to be completely informed before voting on these initiatives! We need to look beyond our own pocketbook and see the disastrous results these very unrealistic initiatives would have on a large portion of our society. I don’t like paying taxes anymore than anyone else, but I don’t want to see my fellow human beings, who are in need of mental health services, housing and various social service programs, go without!
If we are truly a country that is “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” then it behooves all of us to do what we can to make sure that this is true for everyone. I will be voting against Tim Eyman’s initiatives!
