I was appalled by the mean-spirited letter regarding the article on the Iraqi refugees in The Herald. (June 2 letter, “Why keep bringing them?”) They did not choose to come to this country. They were forced out of their home by terrorists and as a result their son was tortured and killed, and their father is missing and presumed dead. Why? Because George W. Bush started the war in Iraq without provocation. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens were killed as a result.
By the way, the letter writer is evidently not a Native American, so his ancestors came from somewhere. They were surely immigrants.
What about the Pottery Barn rule … “If you break it, you own it.” This certainly applies to the Iraqis’ situation.
Sure, times are tough right now. But we are Americans and Americans have big hearts. Big enough to include a poor Iraqi refugee family that is trying to build a new life here.
