I am afraid senior citizens are going without flu vaccine because none is available locally and they believe going to Canada is expensive and time consuming, requiring $100 per person organized excursions which are currently being advertised. In fact, the vaccine is readily and inexpensively available across the border with no hassle.
Recently, I took my 81-year-old mother up to Vancouver for a flu shot. Nothing could have been easier. We chose the walk-in medical center at the Vancouver International Airport. The clinic does not make appointments but there was no wait. My mother was pleasantly surprised when we walked in the door and she was immediately seated with the nurse who expertly administered a pain-free vaccination. It was so quick and easy I got one, too. There are no restrictions. The staff was friendly and efficient. The cost was $30 per person Canadian, less than $25 American. We were in and out of the clinic in 10 minutes. Going mid-week we also had no wait in either direction at the border.
If you or someone you care for are in a high risk group for the flu, consider a pleasant afternoon in British Columbia.
