There was a time when I believed that Republicans were the fiscally intelligent ones. I thought that Democrats would fight for “people issues” and the Republicans would see that we didn’t spend too much money. As you might guess, I’m old!
Times and people have changed. Democrats still do try to care for the weaker members of society, but Republicans appear to have lost their monetary skills.
The Jan. 10 Herald article, “County OKs hiring four deputies” reminded me again that the local Republican officials as well as the federal Republicans seem to spend with no thought of the consequences. Even though just four more deputies will wipe out the county’s reserve fund in less than three years, Republican Council member Jeff Sax wants 43 more! He wants law and justice to be priority one, but fails to note that we already spend almost 70 percent of the general budget on it. That sounds like priority one to me.
Of course we all want everything. We want great schools, great roads, great health care, great fire and police protection, a great environment, great protection of the elderly and poor, and a great economy. However everyone does not seem to want to pay “great taxes.” Be wary of those who say we can have more without paying for it. Watch out for those “spend and spend” Republicans.
