I was just listening to Fox News, and if what I heard is true, the FBI has thumbed its nose at the Department of Justice again. Wanting to interview John Walker Lindh, someone from the FBI called for permission from the Department of Justice. The request was denied. So what did the FBI do? It interviewed him over the weekend.
Whatever way the incident is read the FBI looks out of control:
1. The agents acted alone without clearing with headquarters on such critical interview.
2. The agents did know of the ruling and disregarded it on their own.
3. The agents did it with a “wink and nod” from their superior and rushed out to get it done over the weekend so they could claim innocence.
The question now is the legal value of any information the FBI got; have they deep-sixed any further interviews? This is a pretty important case. In the past, few people questioned the actions of the FBI. As a consequence they misused their powers resulting in the imprisonment of innocent men like Leonard Peltier.
Citizens better pay attention. Even now when Congress and the courts are watching, the FBI is thumbing its nose.
