Nearly every day I drove past the Snohomish County Fire Protection District 8 Station at Chapel Hill and 99th Avenue in Everett/Lake Stevens, knowing the services were there if we ever needed them.
On Oct. 13 my husband had a stroke and called 911. The crew on noon duty at that Everett/Lake Stevens station responded within minutes to his call. That crew saved his life.
My husband is still hospitalized and will be a long time in rehabilitation. He is alive and recuperating well because we have an extraordinary emergency medical team. I will never drive past that station or any other again without tremendous gratitude for the experts who work in those stations. Locally, they happen to be really nice guys, too!
Perhaps you never really grasp how much they’re worth until you need them.
It’s not on this year’s Snohomish County ballot, but sooner or later we will have to decide whether to continue to fund and/or upgrade emergency services. It doesn’t matter whether those services are provided by the city or the county. The services are worth every penny we pay. The men and women who serve on those teams are priceless.
