On Sept. 14, Proposition No. 1, a sales tax increase for public transit service in Everett, will be on the ballot.
Yes, I know that for those of you who have a car available to take you wherever you want to go whenever you want to go there, this isn’t a particularly important issue. Yes, I know that the prospect of more or higher taxes doesn’t make anyone all warm and fuzzy. Yes, public transportation can be inconvenient. I’ve found schedules less convenient now than they were a few years ago, and certainly much less convenient than being able to walk a few steps to a parking spot, climb in a car and take off at will. And yes, public transportation locks you into the bus system’s schedules and routes, which are not always the most direct or timely way to get where you need to go.
However, for those who must rely on the bus, a little inconvenience beats the dickens out of not being able to get where they need at all. For those with disabilities, for many public, private and community college students, or for those with no reliable access to a car, public transportation is an absolute necessity. The additional revenue from Proposition No. 1 should help make bus travel better all around.
So, even though it may make you want to mumble under your breath about taxes, please vote yes for Proposition No. 1. This is an opportunity for you to show generosity, kindness and consideration for others in our community who have a need. Certainly the world can use all the kindness and consideration folks can muster these days. Come on, you know you’re a nice person at heart. For the sake of those in our community who need bus service, won’t you please vote yes?
