Regarding the Jan. 11 letter on emergency shelter, “Board’s investment streamlines system”: Though the one-call, one-list emergency system is a tremendous step forward, there is still nowhere for the homeless with animals to go. They still just sit under a tree or huddle in a corner with their dogs trying to keep warm. They will not give up or board their dogs so they themselves can go into a human shelter. Many of them are mentally ill and you cannot reason with them.
We work with a few of these homeless people with dogs in Everett – motels will not allow dogs, especially large ones. Most of these homeless people have worn out their welcomes for one reason for another with the few motels that do allow dogs.
This year we have not been able to find even one motel that will take a homeless person with a dog, or a trailer park that will allow a trailer with a large dog, so they just sit and freeze. The police have told us that they find the homeless dead on the streets of Everett. If you have land close to central Everett where a trailer can be parked, please let us know. We can also provide and deliver free dog food to these homeless people with animals if you know of any. We also stock a dog food bank for the homeless at the Everett Gospel Mission.
