I am a senior at Snohomish High School. I have been in this school district through all of its financial woes and I feel that school district’s position on the strike and contract negotiation is completely wrong. When the school district was out of money, everything got cut back. There weren’t many computers in the schools, the textbooks we were using talked about the year 2000 as if it was far into the future, and the buildings were in dismal shape. The only thing that this district had going for it was its dedicated teachers.
It wasn’t because of some policy implemented by the district administration or the school board that the students in Snohomish scored as well as the students in neighboring school districts on standardized tests; it was through the hard work and dedication of the teachers. In fact, if the administration and the school board had actually spent any time in the classrooms interacting with th students that they’re supposed to serve – instead of passing the time at their cozy resource center (which is considerably nicer and better maintained than any of the schools are), we wouldn’t be having this strike. Perhaps they would appreciate the miracles that these teachers perform every day; miracles that basically involve providing a quality education to students in a community that doesn’t support its schools. So, now that things like textbooks and buildings have been improved, it is time for the district to reward its one true resource, the teachers, with a better contract. After all, spending money on material things, instead of people, is what got them into the financial hole the first place.
