Trump wants us to declare war — war on whom? Disparate factions who are best left to destroy each other? Poor frustrated crazy slum dwellers in Europe? We declared war on drugs, how did that work? More drugs, cheaper — stronger — more prolific. We fought in Iraq — more corruption, more bombing — more terrorists. The adoption of government sanctioned violence — war — legitimizes suppression of personal liberty and slaughter of innocents. Trump inflames the festering anger and fear in our country. His popularity is symptomatic of disease. Let us find a cure in reasonable systemic change and not give in to the temptation to be the loudest voice in the room.
