After so many myths about “The Marijuana Menace” have been exposed as total nonsense, along comes Mark Staab to assert that not only is marijuana the gateway drug to all the others, but that it is addictive as well. (Sunday letter, “Drug problem begins with pot.”) He also claims that the federal government keeps it illegal for this reason. Not true! The government’s reasons are not nearly that altruistic. Most of the police and other authorities that I have talked with over the years have a different opinion than that stated by the letter writer. Quite the opposite in fact. Marijuana does have one serious problem: It will make a lazy person even lazier, and hungry for quick, high-calorie, low nutrition food. This can be unhealthy. I have smoked marijuana for the past 48 years and have learned not to smoke it unless I have absolutely nothing of importance to do. This includes driving the car.
