I don’t have kids, so I don’t really pay any attention to kid’s clothes commercials but this one hit me between the eyes. JCPenney is still calling their larger size kids clothes “Husky”! Are they serious? I mean, I remember this term being used when I was a kid 46 years ago, but I had no idea it was still being used in the 21st century.
With all the body dysmorphic and weight issues with little girls (and boys) going on today, how do you think it makes a kid feel to be wearing clothes called “Husky” sized?
Kid’s today care way more about their “image” and their clothing (too much I think) than we did when I was a kid; so to hear such a dated term used in present time just really surprised me. I am a plus-size woman, so I have all the empathy in the world for overweight kids. Even though they are not to blame… (Hint hint parents) they still have to deal with all the cruelty the world has to dish out.
I think it is way beyond time to begin using a more modern, less insulting word to describe a larger clothing size category. How about plain old “Small” “Medium” “Large” and “Extra Large” like they use in the adult clothing industry… (Forget about the “Xs” that’s a whole other letter.)
JCPenney and Sears…I know you have been around for a million years and you have great stuff to wear but couldn’t you please update your terminology when describing your size categories for kids? The only thing called a “Husky” around here should be wearing purple and gold and winning football games.
A grown up “Husky.”
