In response to Eugene Robinson’s column, “Holding fire when it’s white guys with guns”: As long as titles continue to be given — African American, Korean American, Muslim American etc., lines will be drawn.
Quite simply, you are an American or not — quit the division, quit asking on applications and registrations. If there needs to be boxes to check it should be: Are you an American? Yes or no.
My family ancestors came from Ireland, France, Germany — I’m a Heinz 57. I do not call myself Irish American, French American, German American. I am an American and proud of it!
I believe the best person for the job should get it, I don’t care if you are purple with blue polka dots!
For those who are wondering, yes I am white. I am one of nine siblings born to an alcoholic father and stay-at-home mom. We were poor, my dad would not let my mom get food stamps or any kind of public assistance, I went to bed hungry. In my teens as things improved my dad would tell us, “You never knew we were poor because you had family and love.”
Today my family is diverse, we are one with a beautiful blend of black, Korean, Italian, Mexican, Jewish, Catholic, atheist, gays, transgender, straights. We don’t always see eye-to-eye but we take care of our own and don’t let entitlements into our lives.
Like my dad said and his dad and his dad before, “Reach down and pull yourself up by your boot straps. Be proud of who you are, work for what you have and love your family, God and country.”
Happy 2016.
