National Adoption Day is today. It is a time to celebrate so many children whose adoptions will be final today. Although their biological families were unable to provide a stable environment for them – friends, neighbors, relatives and even strangers have opened their homes and made these children a part of their lives. As they are adopted today, these kids will know that they are loved. For the rest of their lives someone will be there to guide them.
We applaud National Adoption Day in my home, too. Two of our three children were older children adopted from foster care. They have brought us both joy and heartache, sad times and happy times, difficult times as well as fun ones. We have changed the course of their lives and they have changed us, too. We have been through so much together that we have a deep, irrevocable bond. They are our kids. We are a “real” family!
Consider what you can do to help an older child in foster care. To find about state and private agencies, call Families for Kids at 1-888-794-1794 or check out the Web site at www.familiesforkids.org.
