Concerning the Rush Limbaugh affair: I have yet to see him accused of his true failure. After years of preaching individual freedom, he failed to step up to the plate and act as a free man. Rush should have declared ownership of his own life and body and insisted on keeping his medical affairs private.
Why should I care how a man 3,000 miles away treats his back pain? When did minding one’s own business cease to be a positive character trait?
Those of us who have read the classics of only a century or two ago are all too familiar with the oft-included “bedridden” character. The “Drug Czar” notwithstanding, the development of modern drugs has been a major boon for mankind, and those persons in chronic pain in particular. Please take note that Mr. Limbaugh was able to continue with his work. He didn’t think he had a problem until his personal life was made public, to the delight of critics.
By confessing his “sin” and doing the obligatory stint at a rehab center, he lowers himself by participating in the political correctness he so often derides. These actions constitute the social apology now mandatory for our celebrities when they are caught being human.
Rush Limbaugh, his own rhetoric aside, has not harmed anybody. There is no identifiable victim. His “crime” did not constitute any malicious intent toward any of his fellow citizens. Let him talk away.
