The nomination of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court should concern all citizens based on the primary indications that this justice will not, based on his own interpretation of unitary executive power, act accordingly as a check on presidential abuse of power.
The current domestic wiretapping actions and this administration’s insistence of legality are a perfect example of the necessity of potential justices to have demonstrated a clear ability to act in the best interest of citizens’ rights over questionable presidential prerogative. Alito’s record in this regard does not reflect that he would, in fact, do so.
Another concern is the implication that the principles he would use to undermine Roe vs. Wade would open the door for increased governmental interference in all avenues of private medical decisions, not just those relating to women and their reproductive decisions.
The overreaching of our government regarding the Terri Schiavo incident is an example of where this jurist’s decisions could lead us and with the medical advancements in genetics, cloning, etc. is this an added power government should be given by the courts at this time?
Additional concerns regarding Alito’s record of decisions on environmental, civil rights and worker rights/safety cases (for example: mine safety – the latest tragic example of how jurisprudence, or lack thereof, can lead to lethal consequences) all require further inquiry and ultimately rejection of this candidate’s elevation to the Supreme Court bench.
Please speak out against this nominee, not only to your representatives, but to all those in positions of power to affect the outcome of this decision! One voice can be ignored but upcoming elections are becoming a factor and the voices of many can make a difference in how willing senators will be to vote against their majority constituent’s desires.
