In response to the Dec. 12 letter “City officials need to keep their promises”:
First off, the City of Monroe has a clause in its contract with the YMCA that states it can end the agreement in tough economic times. Well, this counts as tough economic times. Next, by saving the money the city is spending on the YMCA, it would be able to keep city employees and police officers employed instead of having to lay off staff.
If people are going to complain about the city taking away their “free memberships” to the YMCA, maybe they should buck up and pay dues to the YMCA like 95 percent of the members (including myself) do. If getting a free membership is more important than your safety and the safety of your community, then by all means, hold the city of Monroe to its contract. You’re foolish if you do.
