I am a grandfather living in Lynnwood, so I have no axe to grind or direct stake in the Marysville teachers’ strike. Having said that, I read Friday’s guest commentary with interest (“Whitehead, board are standing up for what’s right”). If half of what Greg Aff outlines in that commentary is true, then my perception of what is really going on changes completely. If Mr. Aff is correct, this strike is all about the power of the teachers’ union and absolutely nothing else. The very idea that a district superintendent would run any decision through the union is outrageous because if that were true, then the voters of Marysville should have a vote when union elections are held. I wonder how many teachers are aware of what the union is up to.
By the same token, if Mr. Aff is wrong, someone without bias should unearth the facts and lay them out for all to see. We don’t have a Solomon around to divine the truth and to trust either side is foolhardy.
