Traffic makes Lake Stevens bad choice

Building a UW Campus in Lake Stevens? You’ve got to be kidding. I’m all for higher education, and I agree we need a new college in Snohomish County, but anyone who has seen what is happening in Lake Stevens in regard to the deluge of new housing projects knows that the idea of a UW campus in Lake Stevens, and all the traffic associated with it, is ludicrous.

Try driving on Highway 9 or the trestle anytime near the a.m. or p.m. rush hours and you’ll know what I’m talking about. The President of the Snohomish Chamber of Commerce, in a recent letter of support to The Herald, referred to the proposed site as an urban growth area. Urban sprawl would be a more appropriate term. Until we can build the roads to accommodate such an influx of traffic in the area, the idea of building a 105-acre campus in Lake Stevens is irresponsible and will only add to the problem we already have.
