Tribute to 1952 team sparks memories

Friday, Sept. 27 was a football day I won’t soon forget. I began my day by reading Larry Henry’s excellent article about the undefeated 1952 Everett High School state championship football team. His column captured the spirit of that superb team and their legendary coach, Jim Ennis. I was a wide-eyed Everett High sophomore when those 1952 Seagulls performed and I was excited to know they would be honored that evening at the Everett High vs. Lynnwood High football game.

It was perfect football weather that night at Everett Memorial Stadium and my wife and I watched the see-saw battle on the field as we kept an eye on our granddaughter who is on the fine Everett High cheer staff, supervised by Kathy Dinwiddie. At halftime, I relived the memory of that flawless 1952 season when Everett High Principal Pat Sullivan introduced each of the former players by name. After the introductions, I rushed to the lower stands to snap pictures of an 8-year-old granddaughter who was part of the North Everett Elementary junior cheer squad that performed at halftime. Then I returned to my seat to watch Coach Paul Lawrence’s Seagulls roar back in the second half to win the game.

After the game, I attended a reception for the 1952 team and had a chance to visit with the guys, some of whom I had not seen in the intervening 50 years. It was a marvelous conclusion to a marvelous day.
