Trooper’s integrity is beyond question

I am writing a letter of support for Washington State Patrol Capt. Helmut Steele. I was surprised and dismayed to read in the May 3 Herald that he is accused of harassment and discrimination (“Patrol demotes regional captain”). That is not the person that I know.

I first met Trooper Steele in 1984, when I was a new deputy prosecutor assigned to a criminal case in Lynnwood. The defendant was charged with several misdemeanors from a traffic stop made by Trooper Steele. At trial, it turned out the defendant’s criminal conduct was racially biased against Trooper Steele. Even though Trooper Steele was subjected to discrimination, including racial slurs, he did not retaliate. He always maintained a high degree of professionalism in a very difficult situation, and the case was resolved successfully.

In later years, I observed (then-Sgt.) Steele work with his troopers using a fair but rigorous leadership style. He never asked his officers to do more than he himself was willing to do. The pride he took in wearing the WSP uniform was obvious to all who encountered him. He is dedicated to public safety. Snohomish County can thank Capt. Steele for a high level of commitment to the County DUI Task Force and DUI enforcement.

That is the “Ham” Steele that I know and respect. His integrity and character are beyond question. The WSP needs more leaders like Ham Steele.
