I read with great skepticism the article on Navy Lt. Comdr. John Oliveira (“Ex-Navy officer now a war critic,” March 19). I think there is a lot more to his story than quitting the Navy because he is suddenly against the war in Iraq. Why would a guy quit when he has only four years left to get his pension? Getting to his rank is no easy task. It took me more than two years to make 2nd class builder.
As for Staff Sgt. Denise Watkins, in an article on the same day (“Truck driver would go back if called”), there is a real hero. She knows her duty and is performing it. I salute Denise. I would go back in if I could, but I am 71 years old and they wouldn’t take me.
