The letter writer who feels bad for guest columnist Sid Schwab (“Schwab needs to turn the channel”) states “Indeed, a fact is only a fact when somebody accepts it as such.” Not so. The dictionary definition, from Dictionary.com, but I also looked up fact in several other dictionaries, says:
1. something that actually exists; reality; truth;
2. something known to exist or to have happened;
3. a truth known by actual experience or observation; something known to be true.
I couldn’t find the letter writer’s definition in any text I consulted. I think he has confused fact with opinion.
