I think that the end of Saturday service will do little to cure the Postal services financial problems. By their own admission it will only save about $2 billion in a near $16 billion annual deficit.
In order to more effectively address that deficit why not keep Saturday service and deliver mail every other day? Half of the routes get mail Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The other half Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A postal carrier would alternate between two routes. This would not only allow the postal service to reduce its work force but also its fleet size and miles driven.
Ninety percent of the mail I get is junk mail. The other 10 percent is not so important that it can’t wait another day.
This is a diminishing industry. If it is going to survive, It either has to downsize or be funded by the government. I think the better idea is to downsize.
As Congress has to approve changes, I know my idea hasn’t a chance, but I think that it is the only chance the postal service has.
