So a poll of 1,003 individuals surveyed by the Washington Post-ABC News tells us the majority of Americans believe President Bush lied or deliberately exaggerated the evidence of WMDs?
President Bush did not lie or exaggerate, he relied on the same intelligence provided to President Clinton. And if any of you remember, President Clinton bombed Iraq in 1998 because he felt Saddam Hussein’s regime posed a very real threat. He honestly believed Hussein had chemical and biological weapons and was seeking materials for nuclear weapons.
Iraq clearly had WMDs, no one can dispute it. What’s scary is – where are they? Instead of being critical of President Bush for not finding the WMDs so soon, we need to be concerned about what Saddam Hussein did with them. We also know Hussein supported terrorism around the world. The WMDs could be anywhere. He had 12 years to do whatever he wanted to do with them. Hussein even had time to move them into Syria before the actual war began last year.
I’m not too concerned about these polls because I know a vast majority of Americans feel the war in Iraq was justified. Just seeing the mass graves of innocent Iraqis should convince many that America did the right thing.
As far as the WMDs, they will be found. If Americans trusted President Clinton’s judgment back in 1998, we need to also trust President Bush’s judgment. When you have two presidents believing Saddam Hussein was a real threat to America and the rest of the world, then that’s something to really think about.
