The United States must take a clear and decisive stance against the ongoing brutality of the military junta which took power in Myanmar in February. A fair and transparent election was overturned by the military and since then over 200 people have been killed, kidnapped or disappeared by military forces, according to NPR. Journalists have been jailed and unfairly interrogated. People serving religious institutions have been threatened and beaten. The junta have shut down internet access.
The people of Myanmar have reacted with surprising restraint given these events, the latest of which is a 7-year-old being shot and killed as she ran to her father. But they need our help to bring the military junta to its senses and call for renewed elections for a fair, representative government. Write your representatives and President Biden to sanction the Burmese junta and call on our allies in the region to stand united against the brutal repression of the people.
