I just found out one of Everett’s dirty little secrets. The animal shelter waits 72 hours for a person to claim their pit bull and if they don’t show the dog is put down. They won’t relocate or adopt out the dog. If a person goes in and surrenders their pit, it is immediately put down. People at the shelter are afraid to give much attention to or interact with the pits, because they don’t want to get attached then have to put them down due to the city rule. In their final hours these dogs don’t receive the comfort of closeness to humans.
The lame excuse about there being too many pit bulls doesn’t fly with me when I see so many Labradors everywhere … and don’t be fooled, I’ve seen them attack people yet have never seen that reported in the news. Media is slanted and doesn’t want to make all those Lab owners mad at them (sorry, but true).
If this were prejudice against a person for the color of their skin it would be called illegal and criminal, but because it’s an animal breed and a few people have ruined a few dogs … it’s OK to mistreat, shoot, put down, lock away from sight and have a bias against all of the breed?
This is just plain human stupidity in action! Pits have been rescue dogs, therapy dogs, visiting dogs for elderly, the dog on “Our Gang Comedy” who played with the children. Fear of a breed that for years had been known as loyal, loving, family pets, because of a few is wrong.
Please help me out and write to the city of Everett and ask that they change this ordinance so that the pit bulls can be transferred to other shelters, foster homes and re-homed.
