The Herald’s Dec. 23 editorial (“New paths toward confronting climate change”) is an insightful, optimistic focus on the way ahead with respect to climate action in Washington state. Given the state of national politics now, state legislation to control greenhouse gas emissions is a constructive focus. Such action is urgently needed.
At the same time, we also should expect an equitable national policy that creates great new jobs, increases prosperity for all and has the global reach to reduce emissions worldwide. A bipartisan bill, Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, was introduced in both houses of Congress in the last month to do exactly this. We can expect them to be reintroduced in the new Congress. Such a law will be a great way to kick-start a healthy, prosperous energy economy.
Don’t give up on your members of Congress!
