The WASL is illegal, immoral, impossible.
The WASL is illegal as the No Child Left Behind has never been fully funded.
The WASL is immoral because it forces school districts to use money that should be going to fund the educational needs of students. In Edmonds, the school district was put on notice because some special-ed students didn’t measure up. There are 1,700 students at this high school. Some 1,650 students being threatened because a small group didn’t measure up. The small group will never measure up because they lack the necessary mental abilities to do so. Don’t let their handicaps imperil the other 1,650 who are good, capable students.
Several states are challenging No Child Left Behind. Washington state should join their efforts. We have a governor who wants to use $4 million to get failing students up to par. This is ridiculous! Take a small portion of this money to challenge this No Child Left Behind.
Washington state has excellent safeguards built into the teacher requirements. A degree is necessary and many courses are designed to make sure this person is trained to go into the classroom as a teacher. When hired, a school district has three years to approve or disapprove the teacher’s performance. The high school requirements for students to graduate and receive a diploma are in place. A student deserves a diploma when they have fulfilled these requirements.
Solution: School districts will honor students who have completed the requirements to graduate. Give students the choice to take the WASL. Those who take the WASL and pass will have an endorsement added to their diploma.
The WASL – a waste of time, energy and money!
