My condolences to the families and friends of those killed or injured on I-5 near Smokey Point over the past two years. Unfortunately, now we add another near-miss fatality to the list of recent accidents, when a tour bus nearly crashed into oncoming traffic at that same-old doomed location. What will DOT’s snap reaction be this time? 50 mph? How about more troopers? Those affected deserve more thoughtful solutions.
Whatever the cause of the latest accident, I believe calling off the dogs (troopers) is necessary. A half-dozen troopers, with their radar guns aggressively pointed at commuters every morning, grows tiresome – even dangerous – when it causes the now-programmed commuters (who are already going 60 mph) to overreact and brake to 50 mph. Thursday’s event, while unfortunate, hopefully validates the uselessness of this failed experiment.
It’s time to re-implement the 70 mph speed limit and come up with a new solution. How about rethinking those low-priority, soundproof walls planned for Everett and constructing them in Smokey Point instead for use as barricades? The bureaucrats need to start getting specific on some of this stuff for once or many of us will be joining together to vote yes on I-912.
