I found an honest man in a cruel world in Everett the other day. I stopped at Everett Vacuum on 23rd and Broadway to get some vacuum bags, spaced out and left my wallet in the store. I discovered it missing hours later and freaked. We all know the nightmare – credit cards, driver’s license, Social Security number – my very identity in someone else’s hands. Not to mention the cash.
Retracing my steps, I called Lorry Steinberg to find that he had my wallet and had been trying to contact me. Of course I wanted to pay some money, I wanted to buy lunch for everyone at Everett Vacuum, but Lorry wouldn’t have it. He said he was just glad I’d gotten my wallet back. He has given me something that cannot be purchased.
In a world where it seems we are assailed at our computers and our mailboxes, where our identities are subject to theft, honest people such as Lorry Steinberg exhibit the integrity we all need to believe exists today.
