Value can’t only be counted in dollars

Regarding the Aug. 10 article, “A matter of faith”:

My sons were part of the youth group from Everett First Presbyterian Church which just completed a mission trip to the Yucatan. Allow me to address additional facts left unreported in the article. Yes, $25,000 covered the cost for 11 teenagers. It also covered costs for six adults, Spanish Bibles (25 for children and 15 for adults), books to begin a library in the local school, supplies for the Vacation Bible School which they ran (75 children attended), and all the materials to build the home. In addition, all participants left most of their clothes down there for the villagers, and many took toys for children of all ages.

The family whose home was built has been living in a wooden-pole, thatched-roof hut since Hurricane Isadora destroyed their home in 2002. If their home could have been rebuilt by their fellow Mexicans, it would have been. They were extremely grateful to have the teenagers (and adults) build the sturdy concrete structure they now call home. Everyone’s efforts built a lot of goodwill between the citizens of both countries.

Learning to give back is an ongoing process. If we don’t encourage youth to think beyond themselves, the future will look pretty dismal. Please consider this invitation to attend the 10 a.m. worship service at the Everett First Presbyterian Church this Sunday. The group will be giving a brief review of their trip. A more in-depth presentation will take place later this fall. Talk with the missionaries and determine for yourself if this was a worthwhile trip or not.
