Regarding the Friday article, “Officials may have temporary solution to problem with new ferry”:
“The ferry’s diesel engine appears to be turning the propeller so fast that it’s vaporizing the water around it and spinning in a pocket of air, causing it to vibrate.”
I think the proper term would be “cavitation.” I smell something, and it isn’t vaporized salt water. Maybe they should hire a couple of hydroplane mechanics to fix the problem, because their props spin in excess of 10,000 RPM and they don’t have a problem.
I hope this isn’t the first of many excuses to attempt to justify cost overruns passed on to the taxpayers and delays in service. Not that it has ever happened…
