I just had to say something about the cell phone ban after I read the Friday article by Katya Yefimova in The Herald, “Defiance of cell phone law is widespread.”
You didn’t have to be a “rocket scientist” to know that the ban wouldn’t work when it was made law. It’s a secondary offense. Just like the seat belt law didn’t really work until it became a primary offense.
Make it a primary offense and watch the use drop drastically. Plus the revenues from citations will increase. (Sorry, officers, for the extra work, but it will make our roads a lot safer.)
Hopefully our legislators will have the courage to do without their cell phones while driving, and put some teeth into the law and make it a primary offense. Though I too am a cell phone user, I would support the change to a primary offense for cell phone use while driving. I realize many will not be in favor of that but in the end, we would all be safer.
