I want to voice my opposition to Referendum 51 because it spends way too much of the money collected on new construction and expansion of freeways without focusing much on safety and maintenance and transportation choices. Los Angeles, Houston and Atlanta are a few large metropolitan areas that tried to build their way out of gridlock, and it didn’t work. Washington has a good opportunity to take a different approach. There may be some good prospects in R-51, but not all of the projects will get finished with this tax increase. It won’t be long before they will ask us, or force us, to pay more money to finish what they started. I urge voters to vote no on R-51 and ask our legislators for a better solution. I believe R-51 will just lead to more pavement, more traffic and more taxes.
