On Feb. 5, we have the opportunity and responsibility to go to the polls to support public education in Monroe. We are being asked to support two measures. The first is a levy that will allow our public schools to maintain quality programs for the increased number of children that now live in our community. This levy will support basic education, lower class sizes, transportation and student activities. The second measure is a school construction and technology bond that will provide for construction of a new elementary school in the Fryelands area where approximately 500 school age children reside, modernize 30 year old Maltby elementary school and provide reliable and consistent technology so that all of our kids have the tools they need to compete and be successful in today’s work force.
We have heard some say that they do not feel the need to support school measures because they do not have school-age children, or because their children attend private schools and therefore they already pay tuition. We would ask our fellow citizens to take the broader view. A community where youth are adequately educated is a community that is a nice place to live. In these demanding economic times, is it not more important than ever that every child be educated in a school with excellent resources?
