I am writing to urge Monroe School District voters to exercise their right to vote on Tuesday. This very important “learning” levy makes up approximately 16.8 percent of the district’s budget. If this levy were to fail, we could be facing cuts of staff (including librarians, counselors and educational assistants) athletic programs (and adding “pay for play”) and transportation for after-school events and field trips.
A key thing to remember is this is a replacement levy, not a new tax. It keeps our schools at current levels for staff, class size and program support. Also, remember that levies and bonds are different. Our recently passed measure was a bond, not a levy. Voters understood the need for updating current buildings, adding a new elementary to help with growth and remodeling older schools. It would be a shame to have those nice buildings we all voted for but not the support needed for the programs that are so important to teach our kids.
I moved from the Snohomish School District a few years ago after going through the double levy failure there and do not wish to see Monroe students, teachers and staff suffer through the cuts that would be necessary should voters choose to not support public education in our district.
The previous levy election failed by just a handful of votes. Don’t assume your vote doesn’t matter. It does! Every vote is important.
Please support our kids and vote yes on Tuesday.
