The Snohomish County auditor’s instructions for voters by absentee ballot are confusing. A note on the envelope for absentee ballots informed voters that election day was Sept. 18, 2001 and instructed voters that “This ballot MUST be returned or postmarked by election day to be counted.” In other words, the ballot had to be returned or postmarked on Sept. 17, at the latest, in order to be counted. Is Sept. 17 the intended deadline, or do we have another demonstration of ignorance of our mother tongue?
