The For the People Act, introduced on March 27 in the U.S. Senate after passing in the U.S. House of Representatives, will improve American elections by making our election system more free, fair, secure and accessible to all eligible Americans by modernizing voter registration, establishing the public financing of elections through small donor matching funds, ending gerrymandering, and restoring transparency in our government.
One critical area that this bill will affect is our nation’s election security. Currently twelve states allow some or all voters to cast their ballot on a voting machine without an auditable paper trail. Without a paper trail, there is no way to check the accuracy of an election outcome should there be suspicions of a software error or malicious interference. This bill requires paperless voting machines be replaced with paper ballots or an auditable paper trail. In addition, the bill provides support for states to improve cybersecurity and implement post-election audits, increases security requirements and oversight for election system vendors, and calls for developing a national strategy to protect the security and integrity of U.S. democratic institutions.
The League of Women Voters is joining many other pro-democracy organizations to call upon our local, state and national leaders to support this transformative bill. We urge Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to demonstrate their dedication to a strengthened democracy that works for all by joining the call for a hearing on this historic legislation in the U.S. Senate.
