I had great respect for President Ford as a man (although his demonstrated presidential skills were on a par with Jimmy Carter) until he requested his opinion of the Iraq war not be published until after his death. That instruction bordered on cowardice, and what earthly good did it accomplish toward solving our problem? All his belated opinion did was add a little more false credibility to the many street-corner dimwits who rant and rave about why our immediate withdrawal from the Middle East is the only way to bring about peace. And of course, they believe, the radical, suicidal Muslims would then quickly turn into rational, peace-loving neighbors.
Thanks a lot, Gerald Ford. He could have passed into history as the fine gentleman the eulogists described.
