In his column published Aug. 13, Eugene Robinson accuses J.D. Vance of “swift-boating” Democratic vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz and draws parallels between the John Kerry smear campaign of 20 years ago and the present accusations against Walz. The difference is, the attacks against Sen. John Kerry were false. Those against Walz are proven facts.
The allegations against Kerry, decorated veteran who served in a war zone, were disproved and exposed as a false Bush smear campaign. The evidence against Walz is concrete.
In the case of Walz deserting his men, his fellow unit members, including the former leader of his battalion, have described receiving “warning orders” (communications to troops in advance of formal orders) in advance of Walz retirement at the rank of master seargent (not command seargent major). When it came time to serve in a war zone he pulled a fade and retired. In the case of mis-representing his rank, there is video of his agreeing with having reached the rank of command sergeant major.
I will be the first to credit Walz for his 24 years of service, and as former active duty military (U.S. Air Force) I understand some of the hardships he must have endured. However, his mis-representation of his rank and, far worse, his abandoning of the unit he trained to help lead in combat are facts. As vice presdient he is heartbeats away from being commander-in-chief, and we do not need someone who runs from a fight in that position.
