The Herald recently reported that the Marysville community will be given money from Snohomish County to help finance a school sports programs (“Failed levies slashed Marysville sports; now county will fund some,” The Herald, Sept. 8). Due to successive levy failures in this community, the school district has had to severely reduce its sports program. Using a non-profit partnership, Snohomish County will donate $75,000 as seed money for a one-year alternative sports program. Council member Nate Nehring pushed to fund this program.
This money is part of the federal funds from the federal Inflation Reduction Act to help cover costs county residents have incurred from economic hardships. I feel Council Member Nehring has misappropriated this money, which was intended for the benefit of all county residents, not just his hometown.
Marysville residents have a history of not supporting their levies. Successive levy failures over the decades have made funding schools difficult at best. When county money is gifted to such a community, it rewards the wrong behavior. If Marysville residents want a sports program, they need to find the funds to support that. The surrounding districts have voted to tax themselves for their services. Marysville needs to do the same or do without.
This is county money. It should be used for purposes that benefit all county residents. And Nehring is setting a very bad precedent.
