Along with the Sept. 10 celebration article (“Local schools excel in test”) The Herald ran a picture of Paula Jones, the former principal at Liberty Elementary in Marysville, taking a pudding bath to celebrate her students’ jump in their WASL test scores. I’m wondering, was the last sentence of the caption really necessary?
It read “more than half the school’s students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunches based on family income.” What has that statement got to do with their higher scores? To me you are implying children from low-income families aren’t capable of getting good grades.
It said the scores exceeded the state average. You should be congratulating them for their success, not putting them down because they are unfortunate to have a low income.
I think The Herald owes these children and their families an apology.
I commend the former principal and teacher for obviously following through on their promises.
