Sunday’s edition of the Herald devoted nearly two and a half pages to the saga of Shawna Forde. The article started out discussing the recent incidents affecting Forde’s family. By the end of the first page, however, it was clear that The Herald had no updates on the ongoing investigations. Instead, they filled pages A6 and A7 with the preliminary results of investigations into Forde’s childhood, marriages, arrests, and even a tiff she had with an ex-husband’s ex-wife (I didn’t get a scorecard with the newspaper, so I’m still not sure what that was all about). Most of page A7 was devoted to her relationship with her incarcerated son. The highlight was Forde’s assertion that putting her son in jail was “good parenting.”
Perhaps the Herald just had a slow news day, but still had to publish at least 10 pages of “news” in Section A. I suggest that the Herald put Ms. Forde on the back burner (or maybe back page) until there is a newsworthy development in the investigations surrounding her family. In the meantime, there are plenty of local issues that deserve investigative reporting.
